WithMia Hamm (above). Mia was once considered THE best women's soccer player in the world, winner of two FIFA World Cups and two Olympic gold medals. I'm with Mia in San Francisco in February, 1999 for the draw of the magnificent Women's World Cup which would be held in the U.S. in June of that same year. Mia is also the daughter of my good friends Bill and Stephanie Hamm. I had met Bill while he was working as the air attache' at the U.S. Embassy in Rome in the early 1990s. The Hamms had lived for 8 years in Italy. Some say that young Mia, who as a child only spoke Italian, may have gotten the soccer "bug" from her father who had been a Fiorentina fan during their years in Florence. Mia was also the subject of the cute movie "Bend It Like Beckham". She's married to a baseball player and recently had twin girls.Con Mia Hamm. Mia una volta era considerata LA miglior giocatrice del mondo, vincitrice di due Mondiali della FIFA e due medaglie d'oro alle Olimpiadi. She also briefly coached a mens 3^rd division soccer club. Shes a lawyer by profession as well as a very good television play-by-play commentator. Con Carolina Morace, probabilmente la miglior calciatrice italiana e senzaltro la piu famosa. Carolina e stata per 5 anni il CT della nazionale italiana. Ha anche allenato per un breve periodo una squadra maschile di Serie C. Di professione fa lavvocato ed e anche una bravissima commentatrice sportiva.

So potent was his shot that it often was clocked at over 140 k/hr! He still to this day detains the record of 35 goals in 42 matches with the national team (he scored only 289 goals in 156 matches with his two teams, Legnano and Cagliari).Nella nona foto con forse il piu grande attaccante italiano del dopoguerra, Gigi Riva, che attualmente ricopre il ruolo di team manager della Nazionale italiana. He played 496 matches in the Serie A. The nicest compliment someone ever paid him? When playing for Fiorentina he managed to save 5 free-kicks by Juves Michel Platini. Platini after the match showed reporters one hand and two closed fingers and said: Today the goal appeared this large! With Franco Tancredi (above, on the left), the former goalkeeper of Roma (229 caps. He won one national title with Roma) and the national team (12 caps). Tancredi was very much loved by Roma fans until he betrayed them in 2004 and followed former Roma head coach Fabio Capello to Juventus to coach the goalkeepers. In 2006 he again followed Capello, this time to train Real Madrids keepers. With Donna de Varona, a formerAmericanswimmer, at the 1999 FIFA Womens Soccer World Cup draw held in San Francisco in 1999 (she was involved in the organization of that magnificent World Cup event). De Varona was the youngest swimmer to compete at the Rome 1960 Summer Olympics and at the following Olympics she won gold medals in the 400 meter individual medley. In her career, she set 18 different swimming records. De Varona signed in 1965 a contract with ABC which made her the first female sportscaster in television history. She also helped to establish the Women's Sports Foundation, where she served as their first president from 1976 to 1984. Pellerud was for 9 years the head coach of Canada s womens national soccer team and helped lead the national team to 1^th position in the FIFA World Ranking. In 1995 at the 2^nd Womens World Cup held in Sweden Pellerud won that event as head coach of Norway. He coached the likes of the great Linda Medalen, Hege Riise and goalkeeper Bente Nordby, one of the best in the world. Rainer is one of the foremost experts on the womens international game, not only covering as a sports journalist all major international womens soccer tournaments around the world but also writing fine articles on this sport for FIFAs Magazine. With Betty Vignotto, a pioneer of Italian women`s soccer. Betty won the championship in 1970 with the Milan team Gomma Gomma. She won 6 championship titles and 4 Italian Cup titles. Her record of 56 goals in 1972 still remains unbeaten to this day. Betty played with the national team for 19 years, scoring along the way 107 goals in 109 matches, a record that was only beaten in 1999 by America`s great national team player, Mia Hamm. Since 1991 Betty has been the president of the Reggiana women`s soccer team (con Betty Vignotto, una delle pionieredel calcio femminile in Italia: con la squadra del Gomma Gomma di Milano vinse il campionato nel 1970. We`re at the party at the Los Angeles Ritz-Carlton for the U.S. national team. I`ve known Aaron since roughly 1998 when I gave him a hand with the Italian delegation in preparation for USA`99. Aaron was in charge of communications for that great event. He`s also the person who has paid me one of THE nicest compliments ever when he said: Every federation should have a Mario Rimati! Michelle played with the national team for a whopping 14 years and along the way won the first World Cup in China in 1991, the gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and a second World Cup title in 1999 in the U.S. She had 153 caps and scored 137 goals. Physically-speaking, Michelle was simply an awesome athlete! Here I am with one of the best coaches in the world of the womens game, Americas Tony DiCicco. Tony had been the goalkeeper coach of the U.S.China in 1991. In 1996, as head coach this time of the U.S. national team, he won the gold medal at the Atlanta Games, the first time-ever that womens soccer was played at an Olympic event. Three years after that epic victory Tony won the Womens World Cup final, again as head coach, in front of a record crowd of 90,185 people at the Rose Bowl against China. But it doesnt end there. As head coach of Americas U-20 womens national team, Tony again won the World Cup in this category in December, 2008, in ChileNorth Korea. Along with his coaching responsibilities, Tony has also been running for years his successful goalkeeping school in Connecticut (www.goalkeeper.com). Eccomi con uno dei migliori allenatori al mondo di calcio femminile, lamericano Tony DiCicco. Tony era stato lallenatore dei portieri della nazionale americana quando lAmerica vinse il primo Mondiale in Cina nel 1991. Nel 1996, questa volta da CT della nazionale americana, Tony vinse la medaglia doro ai Giochi di Atlanta, la prima volta per il calcio femminile alle Olimpiadi. With Anson Dorrance, the head coach of the University of North Carolina`s women`s soccer team, in San Francisco in 1999. Dorrance is one of America`s most winning coaches, of any sport: in 30 years as UNC`s head coach he`s only won 19 national championships with an amazing all-time record of 648-32-19! Anson was also the head coach of America`s national women`s soccer team when in 1991 it won its first World Cup title in China. That team had the likes of Mia Hamm (whom Anson discovered and coached for four years at UNC, the same university which was attended by a certain Michael Jordan!) and April Heinrichs who would later go on to become the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team from 2000-05 (and who led the U.S. to a gold medal victory at the 2004 Athens Olympics). Just the 1999 World Cup roster featured eight players from UNC which won America`s second title in Los Angeles. Anson has also coached Kristine Lilly who to this day holds the world record (both male and female) of caps with the national team (well over 300!). He`s also the author of some fine books on the women`s game, such as, Training Soccer Champions; The Vision Of A Champion and perhaps the best of the three, The Man Watching (for which I did a review on Amazon.com). She was captain of the U.S. when it won its first-ever FIFA Women`s World Cup in 1991 in China. She finished her international playing career with 47 caps and 38 goals. April is a 1986 graduate of the University of North Carolina where she was named National Player of the Year twice. She became the national team's head coach in 2000. April lead the U.S. to wins in international tournaments such as the Algarve Cup and of course the much gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Heinrichs also led her team to the Silver Medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the Bronze Medal at the 2003 Women`s World Cup in the U.S. Heinrichs' 5 years at the helm lead to an 87-17-20 record. Rome, December 1989, the old PalaEur arena. The draw for the 1990 World Cup in Italy is about to take place. Many international stars are there, such as Bobby Moore, Pele`, Sophia Loren, Luciano Pavarotti, Zagalo (who won a few World Cups with Brazil, also as head coach in 1970 in Mexico), Socrates and the great Sir Bobby Charlton, the former captain of Manchester United and the English national team which won the World Cup title in 1966 in England. As we were in the buffet area just after the draw, I caught him posing for me as I snapped a pic of him! Roma, dicembre, 1989 e il vecchio PalaEur. Sta per svolgersi il sorteggio dei Mondiali di Italia`90. Ci sono tantissime stelle internazionali presenti quel giorno come Bobby Moore, Pele`, Sophia Loren, Luciano Pavarotti, Zagalo (che vinse un paio di Mondiali con il Brasile, anche da CT nel 1970 in Messico), il Dottor Socrates e il grande Sir Bobby Charlton, l`ex capitano del Manchester United e della nazionale inglese che vinse il Mondiale nel 1966 in Inghilterra. Eravamo nella zona del buffet dopo il sorteggio e ho pescato Sir Bobby che si stava preparando per la foto che stavo per scattargli!

Talk about great before and after pics! Here I am with Bill and Stephanie Hamm, the proud parents of what was once considered the most famous and best female soccer player in the world, Mia. The before picture was taken exactly 10 years ago right after the stupendous U.S.-China final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, in July, 1999. I was red as a tomato as I had been sitting in 40+ Celsius degree heat for more than 4 hours in that stadium! Right after the final, which also included President Bill Clinton, Jack Nickolson, Antonio Banderas and wife Melanie Griffith, Canadian singer k.d. Lang and Jennifer Lopez who sang the official song of that final, Lets Get Loud, I was invited to go to the party for the U.S. which had just won its 2^nd World Cup title at the Ritz-Carlton hotel. A real honour for me to have been invited to that party. The pic of us is taken at Mias uncles place in Hollywood. The day after I would return to Rome after three fantastic weeks spent in the U.S. as Italys interpreter (Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Jacksonville Florida, back to LA and then New York-Rome)!

The other pic was taken in October, 2009, when the Hamms came to Italy for a vacation. We had them over for Sunday lunch and spent only seven hours talking about Mia, the World Cup 10 years ago and basically everything under the sun! Ten years after it had really been great to seen them again.

Le famose foto prima e dopo! Eccomi con Bill e Stephanie Hamm, gli orgogliosi genitori di una calciatrice che anni fa fu considerata la piu famosa e la piu brava del pianeta, Mia. La prima foto fu scattata esattamente 10 anni fa subito dopo la stupenda finale USA-Cina alla Rose Bowl di Pasadena. Ero rosso come un peperone perche ero stato a cuocere in 40+ gradi per ben 4 ore in quello stesso stadio! Subito dopo la finale, dove erano presenti anche il Presidente Bill Clinton, Jack Nickolson, Antonio Banderas e la moglie Melanie Griffith, la cantante canadese k.d. Lang e Jennifer Lopez che canto linno ufficiale della finale, Lets Get Loud, ero stato invitato al Ritz-Carlton per la festa in onore delle americane che avevano appena vinto il loro secondo titolo Mondiale. Era stato per me un vero onore essere invitato a questa festa. La foto di noi tre fu scattata a casa dello zio di Mia a Hollywood. Il giorno dopo sarei rientrato a Roma dopo aver trascorso tre fantastiche settimane in America come linterprete dellItalia (Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Jacksonville Florida, di nuovo LA e poi New York-Roma)!

Laltra foto invece fu scattata ad ottobre, 2009 quando Bill e Stephanie sono venuti in Italia in vacanza. Li abbiamo invitati a pranzo e abbiamo trascorso solo 7 ore a parlare di Mia, di quel Mondiale di 10 anni fa e di un sacco di cose! Era veramente bello rivederli 10 anni dopo.

A rather long story made short: the former U.S. Ambassador to Italy, Mel Sembler, one fine Sunday afternoon invites to his rather nice residence, Villa Taverna, about 80 people to view (in English) the movie A Beautiful Mind, with Oscar-winner Russell Crowe. Yes, Villa Taverna also hosts a small 80-seat movie theatre (it also has a tennis court, swimming pool and catacombs!). Around that same period, Crowe is actually in Rome for the Italian premiere of the same movie. At the beginning of the movie, Sembler tells us that theres a chance that Crowe may pass by so say hi, which around 5:30 pm he does aboard a large scooter and wearing a track suit! As he entered the residence, I was right next to the door. I shook his hand and said: Youre still THE best gladiator of them all!, at which point with a really nice smile, he looked at me and said with his Australian accent: Thanks mate!

Per fare una lunga storia un po breve: lex Ambasciatore USA in Italia, Mel Sembler, una domenica invita alla sua bella residenza, la Villa Taverna, unottantina di persone a vedere (in inglese) il film, A Beautiful Mind con il premio Oscar Russell Crowe. Si, la Villa Taverna ha anche un piccolo teatro di 80 posti (ha anche un campo da tennis, una piscina e catacombe!). In quello stesso periodo, Crowe e a Roma per la prima italiana dello stesso film. Prima dellinizio del film, Sembler ci dice che ce forse una buona possibilita che Crowe passi a salutarci. Ed eccolo che si presenta verso le 17.30 a bordo di un Vespone ed indossando una tuta sportiva! Come entra nella villa, mi metto accanto alla porta. Gli stringo la mano e gli dico: Rimani sempre il PIU grande gladiatore di tutti! Mi guarda e con un bel sorriso mi dice con laccento australiano: Thanks mate!

With American author Susan Masino whos written the very entertaining book, Let There Be Rock, on AC/DC (whom I have seen so far 8 times in 8 different cities in 4 different countries: Canada, Italy, Austria and Germany). I managed to convince Susan to come to Udine to present her book the day before AC/DCs epic concert in Udine (theyre only Italian concert) on May 19^th, 2010 (pic thanks to Ricky Modena)!

Con Susan Masino, l'autrice americana del divertente libro Let There Be Rock sugli AC/DC (che ho visto finora 8 volte in 8 diverse citta in 4 diversi paesi: Canada, Italia, Austria e Germania). Sono riuscito a convincere Susan di venire a Udine a presentare il suo libro il giorno prima del grande concerto degli AC/DC a Udine (la loro unica data italiana) il 19 maggio del 2010 (foto grazie a Ricky Modena)!

With the great Gianni Rivera (center), the "Golden Boy" of Italian soccer, Italy's very first European Golden Ball winner and famous for having scored the over-time goal in the epic Italy 4- W.Germany 3 match in Mexico at the 1970 World Cup, during a conference on youth soccer in Udine in May, 2011. Rivera would then face Pele's Brazil in the final, which was won 4-1 by the mighty Brazilians. On the left is Massimo Giacomini, a former Udinese coach who brought Udinese from the 2nd to the 1st division many years ago.

Con il grandissimo Gianni Rivera (centro), il "Golden Boy" del calcio italiano, durante un convegno a Udine a maggio del 2011 sul calcio giovanile. Rivera e' stato il primo italiano a vincere il Pallone D'Oro europeo. E' stato anche famoso per aver segnato durante i tempi supplementari nella grande partita Italia 4 - Germania dell'Ovest 3 in Messico durante il Mondiale del 1970. Rivera poi incontro' il Brasile di Pele' nella finale, vinta 4-1 dai fortissimi brasiliani. Alla sinistra c'e' Massimo Giacomini, un ex allenatore dell'Udinese che porto' la squadra anni fa dalla Serie B alla Serie A.

The other great Brazilian player, Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo, being interviewed at Romes old PalaEur arena in December, 1989 during FIFAs draw for the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Zagallo not only won both the 1958 and 1962 World Cups with Pele but also coached him to a World Cup title at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. He was also an assistant coach at USA94. Laltro grande giocatore brasiliano, Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo, intervistato a dicembre del 1989 al vecchio PalaEur di Roma durante il sorteggio della FIFA dei Mondiali di Italia90. Zagallo non solo vinse i Mondiali nel 1958 e 1962 con Pele ma fu anche il suo allenatore quando il Brasile vinse i Mondiali nel 1970 in Messico.
